In the event that an artist decides to divorce himself or herself from the public and create work without the distractions of the interactions that makeup our existence, does that same artist then also lose that thread with the connection of “art imitating life”?
The start of a new piece can sometimes be bag of mix emotions. There are moments when the visual writer in me is present when I stand in front of the material and just stare at it for lengths of time. Notes became something of an inspirational motion for me. I began with large pieces of cardboard on the floor of my studio ro protect the floor. This then transformed into my journal for my thoughts and inspirations. Sometimes even sketches. What has transpired is the creation of work. The cardboard is now a tool in the creation. It not only serves as a journal for thoughts but also the “mock-up” area of my studio. This image is one of the current pieces that I’m working on now.
Here’s a look at some of my newest work that I have been working on. I’ve been on the verge of bringing painting back into my repertoire and with the last few pieces and what’s to come I’m merging the sculptural form with the paint to create a visual experience that differentiates from the the 2D form. The colors, the textures, the materials, the form, and the viewing experience all become part of the artwork.
I’ve also eliminated the backing from the work intentionally. This is to incorporate the surface into the piece or to incorporate the piece into the surface onto which it is being displayed on.
These images are close-ups of the surface of one piece that I have been working on.
